Addressing Water Scarcity in Developing Countries with an Innovative Ultrafiltration Device

Due to rapid population growth, particularly in urban areas, and the consequent overexploitation of high-quality water sources alongside inadequate water supply systems, a significant portion of the population in developing countries lacks access to clean drinking water. This situation renders them vulnerable to waterborne diseases, which constitute approximately 90% of visits to medical professionals.

While there are several online devices available for purifying domestic water, primarily utilising UV treatment, these options are often costly and require frequent maintenance or replacement. The “on-line domestic water purification device” is based on Polysulfone type of ultrafiltration membrane in a unique cylindrical configuration.

Design

  • Developed by the Bhabha Atomic Research Center, it will utilise membrane-type physical filtration using ultrafiltration processes.
  • The proposed Water Purification System is designed to be robust, sustainable, easy to operate, and maintain.
  • It will be constructed with non-corrosive materials with adequate mechanical strength and thermal resistance.
  • The system will operate satisfactorily under standard conditions, with inlet and outlet connections designed to prevent mistakes by workmen.
  • Constructed with Grade 304 stainless steel, the unit will be secure and stable.
  • Compliance with minimum potable water requirements and adherence to nationally/internationally recognized safety norms will be guaranteed.
  • The system will filter microorganisms and suspended particles while retaining beneficial elements, minerals, and weakly alkaline properties, with zero water wastage during purification.
  • Membrane cartridges will employ multi-capillary ultrafiltration technology developed by BARC, ensuring strength and hydrophilic properties.
  • The system will operate efficiently under forced flow conditions, with no water wastage during filtration.
  • Designed for a continuous filtered water flow rate ranging from 10 to 500 litres per hour.
  • The membrane will target particle sizes between 0.01 to 0.04 microns, with pores as small as 10 nanometers.

Installed in Shatabdi Express & Swarn Jayanti Express

Water purifiers based on UF (Ultrafiltration) polysulfone membranes have been installed in the Shatabdi Express and Swarn Jayanti Express trains. These installations aim to provide passengers with access to clean and safe drinking water during their journeys.

Jayetpur water filter inaugurated by DIRECTOR of BARC

The Jayetpur water filter was inaugurated by the Director of BARC (Bhabha Atomic Research Centre). This new installation is part of a broader initiative to improve water quality and accessibility in the area.
